Ilkka wrote earlier about his worries about integrating IT in cars.
I'm even more afraid of the visions in which phone, TV, radio, and all other kinds of communication work over the Internet. Internet goes down every now and then - sometimes due to faulty hardware, sometimes due to worms, viruses, and such. I don't want that my phone, TV, and radio stop working every time there are problems with the Internet.
We need overlapping systems, if only for security.

I would start looking for something to replace electricity. Damages done when we lack electricity are far worse. PC's won't run at all!!! What are computer scientists to do then :)
So do we need a backup Internet? Internet 2?
Most of the communication goes anyway through some digital media. So there is a piece of hardware on the way. And that can get broken, be hacked or misused.
But I agree that we shall not entirely rely on the Internet.
Actually, this is a lot more tragic as it seems. Regarding our DEPENDENCY in electricity and technology.
There is an American movie, which unfortunately I do not remember the title. However, it is about what would it happen if one medium size city of USA would have a power cut for a weekend.
Then, air conditioners will not work (in here would be heating systems), no cash (ATM are off) no possibility to buy anything in case you have money (the register machines at the stores do not work), your cars will move as long as you have gas in them (gas stations will not work). If the water system of your house is managed via an electric water pump (that high probably it is) you will have as much water as your collect water system got. And the story can continue, as you have no idea.
For that, devices as TV, mobile phones, and even computer are luxury. In the movie you see the panic of the people as time pass by, for hunger, hot weather, no way to move, etc. And the night comes, no enough candels, neither batteries, and of course the “bad” guys making there moves, because there are no alarm systems, no police, no fireman. A complete mess… and it was just a middle size city!
Going back, more related to the topic of your post and Ilkka’s. I think all of us, developers of technology, should go back to the basics once in a while. Making reflections as Roman wrote on Ilkka’s post.
Actually, recently I saw the movie " War Games" and I got on clear, once again, computers will not substitute humans (that is one of my basics, for example). Sometimes we have to refresh this idea, isn’t it? Yeap, we always have to come back to the basics.
And I am not sure if the question is if we are ready for it? (coming from Ilkkas post) I would say do we HAVE TO depend ONLY in that?
I agree we need to overlap, buy my question to you would be, overlap Technologies? Wouldn’t be better old and new habits? Or overlap online and offline “knowledge”? While writing this post, it came to my mind how much do I enjoy to go to those Finnish Summer Cottages with no electricity, no water, nothing around, for a weekend. Isn’t it be healthy to keep also those “old” ways to do the things, to survive, to live, while developing new technological supported ones?. I hope the kids never stop to learn how to write with pencil and pen, because they only are using keyboard or controls, or that they do not learn to make square roots, because they depend only on their calculator. The problem really goes much deeper in attitudes, ways to act and knowledge, than only the topic of cars, computers or backups….
Correct! If we had IT everywhere, we'd be dependent on it and wouldn't know how to live basically. Back to the basics, guys. That would make us happier. Keep it simple.
I think you're all correct. What we need is not more technologies but less dependency on technology.
