There is a fundamental problem in speaking about feminism. That is the number of feminisms there are. There are the three waves; there are Black feminism, socialist feminism, and queer theory; there are different shades of radical feminists; and so forth. And I'm not sure if they all agree on -- anything.
Recently Veronika Honkasalo (the speaker for Unioni, The League of Finnish Feminists) criticized Finnish political parties for being afraid to use the term feminism in their party politics. But in the same article Veronika Honkasalo wrote, "Feminism, at least as I see it, is awareness about the gender biases in power structures and active endeavour to correct those biases."
"At least as I see it"?!?
If the leading feminist in Finland needs to add "At least as I see it" to what she says about feminism, the term is definitely too vague and we shouldn't be criticized for refraining from using the term.
