- If you think that I gave you a good idea, a nifty term, a nice concept, or some other small spark, and if you think I should be acknowledged for that, then do exactly that: acknowledge me.
- If you think that some of the stuff I've published is useful in your work, then cite my stuff.
- If you think that we can together write about a new interesting thing, then YES! let's co-author the text.

Actually, if the corresponding author is, as the word implies, responsible for the article, then the corresponding author must be the one who decides who the co-authors are and on what grounds they are co-authors.
did you have problems with those?
Not really; I just think that it happens that when we should cite, we ask to co-author and when we should acknowledge, we cite or ask to co-author...
... and I have actually seen a gift authorship. In one paper one person was included in the list of authors because this person was accidentally dropped out of some other article.
That is not how things should be done.
Hard to say what is right and what is not right. Policies btwn univs vary.
